The Sementeryo of the Royals, Nasqh-i-rustam

After roaming around the City of Shiraz I thought we we're on our way to Persepolis. Yehey! I said to myself, at last we're gonna be in Persepolis. But when the driver divert his driving on the left side of the road where the signboard clearly states that Persepolis was on the RIGHT side of the highway i knew something is wrong. Then i start asking the driver;

Me: "Akah, Persepolis Ras hi-way. We went Chap!?!"
Driver: "Mohandes, no problem, me go Chap very good place."
Me: "Persepolis beautiful, but this is no Persepolis?"
Driver: 'No problem, Ayish Mohandes"

(in short the driver told me to be still and be quite, he's in charge daw, though i doubt if that's the correct translation according to Allan)

(do you know where your going too)?

Quite and still i was until we arrived in this so called very good place. We we're suprised because we we're brought to a mountain wall. Yikes, impatient I am i blurted "what are we gonna see here", but i didn't wait for an answer because I was
struck by what i've seen.

According to wikipedia (and other websites)Naqsh-i-Rustam is about 4.8 kilometers northwest of Persepolis in the mountain range of Husain Kuh. This is where Darius the Great and his successors had their monumental tombs carved into the cliff.

And still according to another website, "Although Naqsh-i-Rustam had long been a sacred area (as the remains of a Pre-Achaemenid relief show), Darius the Great was the first to choose it as a burial place. His successors not only imitated his idea of a cliff tomb but also copied the layout of the tomb itself. The dramatic facade of the tomb is constructed like a cross. An entrance leads into the tomb chamber, cut deep into the rock. In the panel above this facade is a relief depicting the king standing on a three-stepped pedestal in front of an altar. His hand is raised in a gesture of worship. Above him floats the winged disk of Ahuramazda, god of the Zoroastrian religion. This scene is supported by throne bearers representing the twenty-eight nations of the empire. On the side panels are the king's weapon bearers and the Persian guards. The trilingual cuneiform inscriptions on three panels of the rock wall either enumerate the twenty-eight nations upholding the throne or glorify the king and his rule. Some traces of pigment found on the facade of the royal tombs suggest that all or most of the stone reliefs had been painted".

Only the tomb of Darius I can be identified beyond doubt by inscriptions. The three other tombs at Naqsh-i Rustam are attributed to his immediate successors, Xerxes, Artaxerxes I, and Darius II. Other royal tombs of similar form, thought to be those of the later Achaemenids, were built at Persepolis itself, cut into the rock face of the Kuh-i Rahmat, overlooking the Terrace. The two complete tombs are assigned to Artaxerxes II and Artaxerxes III; an incomplete tomb was perhaps meant for the last Achaemenid king, Darius III. About 2 km south of Naqsh-i Rustam, on the south bank of the river Pulvar, are the remains of an unfinished freestanding structure, perhaps the base of a tomb intended for Cambyses II, modeled on the imposing tomb of his father, Cyrus the Great, at Pasargadae, up the Pulvar 43 km northeast of Pers

Visiting the would be complete if you go inside the tomb but sad to say it's prohibited to go inside the tomb, plus the fact that there is no ladder to go inside the tomb. If you can see in the picture the small opening on the cliff is the entrance to the tomb. So we just content ourselves looking at it from afar.

When we visit the place, it was around 11:00 am and there is no shade near the place. The only shade there is located at the entrance gate, thank God me and jasper bought a Cowboy hat to protect us from the sun. hehehehe.

A school trip of girls we're with us when we're there, and the girls are from our place as well (in Assaluyeh), there nice and sweet, always waving at us foreigners (hehehe) but we didn't talk to them though.

After an hour of photoshoot and history lesson from our driver, finally we're on our way to Persepolis. I'm very glad we've visit this place coz it reminds me on how powerful the kings of Persia we're before. Imagine to carved a cliff for your tomb with your place. Now that's what I called extravagance at it's finest!

Roaming around City of Shiraz

We woke up 7:00am and had a sumptous breakfast, courtesy of sir jun
and ian, while watching Destiny's Child concert on DVD. By 8:00
we're on our way to Persepolis. But before we arrive on the said
complex, our driver took us first on a trip to the city of Shiraz.

("Say cheese guys")

First stop was the 18th century citadel of Karim Khan-e Zand which
is located on the city center. This majestic citadel stands
majestically in the city square, and a popular venue for concerts
and plays. Sadly when we're about to visit inside the citadel
it was still closed and to be open during afternoon time only.

(Sorry, we're close!)

Next stop was the Qur'an Gate, according to wikipedia (hehehe)
this gate was part of a big citadel/palace located on the same
area but was destroyed during the course of time. Now this gate
is a famous picnic grounds of Shirazis and favorite camp site of
the citizens of Iran as well. A lot of campers was there in the parks
when we got there (since they have 2 holidays) and a lot of kids were
approaching us and asking for pictures. It's my first time people a
ctually approach me and ask for my picture!eventhought they thought
i'm a Japanese.

(Campers left and right!)

After taking some pictures of Qur'an Gate, we drove ourself to
Persepolis, but along the way we've seen this very peculiar
building that is still under construction.Later we we're informed
it was named Shiraz grand hotel and tend to be a 5 star hotel
that will cater foreign tourist who will visit the famous Persepolis.
Hmm..i'll bet its expensive to stay on that hotel =D.

(Best buddy Jasper and Me)

My way or the Hi-way..Iranian style

It was September 2006 when me and some colleagues at JGC South Pars project decided to have a short vacation in one of Iran's famous tourist spot. Sir Jhun, our department secretary, arrange all our travel documents and accomodations and food (such a nice person he is!) and all we have to do is sit back and relax pay the fees for the transpo and the lodging.

We leave our camp in Assaluyeh 2:00pm Thursday doing only half day in the office. Friday is holy day in Iran (like Sunday here in Philippines)but still we came to work as well (sayang O.T.). and Saturday is national holiday in iran (and yet we still went to work, o.t. again!). That's our itinerary actually, leave the camp by Thursday afternoon and return back to camp by Saturday evening.

We have 3 cars, and each car has 5 passengers (including driver). I was grouped with the younger guys (best buddy Jasper include). The trip from Assaluyeh to Shiraz (the main city before Persepolis, and where our gracious host is located) is 12 hours! I'ts very uncomfortable sitting on a Toyota corolla because it doesn't have enough space to move on (plus the fact that my friends are slightly chubby persons!).

First stop of the trip was Kangan, 50kms from Assulyeh. We need to stop here to buy snacks and to go to washroom. Nothing much was to be seen here except the store that sells gold jewelry. Jewelry sshopping is a must in Kangan for they had the famous iranian Gold (or something to that effect) on a very low price. No, we did not buy gold when we pass this place since the stores are located in the southwest portion of the city, near the sea actually.

After snacks and freshen up, we endure the 10 ten hour drive on the Iranian countryside, vast desserts, wide highways that traverse the Zagros Mountains, beautiful oasis, quite countryside and a lot of sheeps and goats!

(Actually during the whole trip, i was praying the rosary because the driver drives very very fast! You can't blame them, they have 6 lanes road, asphalt and lubak free highway and no traffic!)

It was 10:00 pm when we had out dinner in a restaurant somewhere along the way. The place is great because it's situated on the top of the mountain (ala baguio) so it's cold, and we buy fresh kiwis, pistacios, apples and grapes. The usual specialty of every iranian resto is KEBAB,whether chicken or beef it still delicious,
and that what we've ordered. This is the start pala of our KEBAB diet since we've aten kebab during the whole duration of our travel. Notice the wall design of the resto, they are very fond of decorating their wall with tiles with drawing.
Yes the same tile we use in our washroom but with very colorful and intricate design naman.

After dinner we continue our journey again to Shiraz and after 2 hours we finally made it to the house in Shiraz. After some pleasant greetings and some hello to the owner, we decided to sleep and be ready for the next day, after all we have a whole
palace to visit tomorrow =D.

Batista in Manila

Saw him yesterday at Gold's Gym in Makati...

Man, this guy is HUGE!!!

His trainor chooses the perfect time to work-out (i.e. 3:00pm) to avoid the
madding crowd/usisero that might affect his workout routine (there were
only a couple of gym-goers in the gym that time)

Didn't got any picture or autograph of him, i've left my forever low battery
cellphone on the locker during that time =(.
